Elizabeth Cropper, Dean, Center for Advanced Study in the Visual Arts, National Gallery of Art, Washington D.C., presents the 2018 Dr. Coleman Mopper Memorial lecture, “Guido Reni: The Success and Failure of the Italian Rubens."

The Bolognese painter Guido Reni (1575-1642) was once considered to be among the most prominent painters in Europe. In his account of Guido’s life in his Felsina pittrice (Bologna, 1678), Carlo Cesare Malvasia compared him to the great Flemish painter Peter Paul Rubens, but lamented his failure to capitalize on his success during his lifetime. A compulsive gambler, yet obsessive about control of his living arrangements, Guido Reni presents a series of fascinating paradoxes that will be examined in this lecture in connection with some of his best known works, including the Head of Christ Crowned with Thorns in the Detroit Institute of Arts.

Sponsored by the Dr. Coleman Mopper Memorial Endowment Fund in conjunction with the European Paintings Council and the Visiting Committee for European Sculpture and Decorative Arts.
