Absinthe has long had a reputation for causing hallucinations and stoking creativity, which is probably why its most famous drinkers are all artists, writers and poets. Michigan Opera Theatre and The Whitney invite you to travel back in time to the inspired gatherings at 27 rue de Fleurus in Paris, where American expatriates Gertrude Stein and Alice B. Toklas hosted (and most likely served absinthe to) luminaries of art and literature such as Pablo Picasso, F. Scott Fitzgerald, Henri Matisse and Ernest Hemingway. This event is for guests 21 and over only.
The Ghost Bar will be transformed into a 1920’s Parisian salon where you can learn about art, music, literature, and of course, absinthe! Tickets will also be available for MOT’s upcoming production of Ricky Ian Gordon’s opera 27, based on the life of Gertrude Stein and Alice B. Toklas. This Premier Edition will be hosted by the spirit of Gertrude Stein.
Each room of The Ghost Bar will have a different offering, each starting on the hour beginning at 7:00 p.m.
Absinthe Tasting: Enjoy an absinthe tasting and learn how the Green Fairy became the drink of artists.
Salon Music: Artists from Michigan Opera Theatre will present music from Ricky Ian Gordon’s 27 and music heard in Parisian salons of the 1920’s.
Picturing Picasso: Learn about Picasso’s different periods and then draw your own!
Inside Stein’s Salon: Interact with the «Spirit» of Gertrude Stein, her work, and her impact on the art and literary scene of 1920’s Paris.
