Celebrate the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. at the Detroit Institute of Arts. The museum will be open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. exclusively for Martin Luther King, Jr. Day on Monday, Jan. 15 with activities for visitors of all ages. Admission is free for residents of Wayne, Oakland and Macomb counties. «Monet: Framing Life» and «Church: A Painter's Pilgrimage» will be also be open and free to the public. Art-making: Create and Donate Notebooks, 11 a.m.–3 p.m.
In honor of the national Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service, create pamphlet-stitch notebooks—one to be donated to a local school and one for yourself.

Film: «King: A Filmed Record...Montgomery to Memphis.» 1 p.m.
Constructed from a wealth of archival footage, the Oscar® nominated King: A Filmed Record… Montgomery To Memphis is a monumental documentary that follows Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. from 1955 to 1968, in his rise from regional activist to world-renowned leader of the Civil Rights movement. Rare footage of Dr. King's speeches, protests, and arrests are interspersed with scenes of high-profile supporters and opponents of the cause. Restored to full-length by the Library of Congress, the complete version of King is a cinematic national treasure that gives viewers an appreciation of the personal challenges he endured and the cultural legacy he left behind. Admission is free.

The «Big Picture» Guided Tour, 1 p.m.
Take a free guided tour of the DIA's collection, with a focus on the African-American galleries. Tours depart from the Great Hall.
