4-6 p.m. Storytelling workshop FREE with RSVP
Participants will explore the art, significance and essentials of storytelling and construct their own story by focusing on topics of race, identity, being the “other” culture, confronting stereotypes and more.
6-7 p.m. Gallery stroll of THEM: Images of Separation, Hate and Violence
This exhibition showcases items from popular culture – postcards, license plates, games, souvenirs, costumes and more – that use negative imagery to stereotype or discriminate against different groups.
7-9 p.m. Live storytelling $8 AANM Members, $10 general public.
Enjoy an opening reception with light refreshments and hear some of the most inspiring and talented storytellers in the metro Detroit community share their personal experiences on topics of race and racism, identity, culture, confronting stereotypes and being labeled “the other”.
AANM's Hikayat personal narratives series presents evenings of live storytelling, networking and culture! Laugh, cry, and get lost in the intimate stories as storytellers share their personal experiences centered around specific themes. Prior to the live storytelling AANM offers FREE workshops where participants explore the art and significance of storytelling, found in many cultures including Arab culture, as well as the essentials of good storytelling, and construct their own story.
