Red Bull House of Art is pleased to present New Wave, a group exhibition organized by Ben Venom, featuring nine artists who are redefining how we view contemporary craft. Picking up the loose threads of the handmade in our tech dominated era, these artists are pushing the boundaries of their chosen medium. Examining themes of ritual, sexuality, and power, the work in this exhibition aims to shatter the myth of traditional craft-based work as a solely domestic art.
New Wave features quilts, weaving, ceramics, and printmaking based works, with each artist bringing new interpretations of established techniques and styles. Many of the works included can still operate outside of the gallery walls as fully functional pieces despite this break with tradition. Viewers will be confronted with images of otherworldly creatures, battle jackets, menacing masks and weapons that can be pulled off the wall and used at any time. Fashion, Function, and Art collide.
