Community Choice Credit Union presents the Wyandotte Business Association BBQ Throwdown, a Kansas City Barbeque Society (KCBS) sanctioned event, on May 19 & 20, 2017 in Downtown Wyandotte. This Wyandotte staple event is expanding and moving to a NEW location and will be on the waterfront near Bishop Park.
Everything kicks off on the evening of Friday, May 19 with Mayor Joe Peterson’s Rib Throwdown, which will pit local grill masters against each other to see who has the best backyard ribs. That will be followed on Saturday by the Kansas City Barbeque Society (KCBS) sanctioned competition featuring some of the best BBQ in the nation. Both days will feature live music, cold brew and the opportunity to feast out on some incredible BBQ.
During Mayor Peterson’s Rib Throwdown from 5–11 p.m. on Friday, guests can take advantage of a special package that includes eight rib samples, a souvenir glass mug and their first beer for $20. This offer is only available online at Wyandottebiz.org until Wed, May 17 or until sold out. Guest will also be able to purchase items directly from the BBQ food vendors. The BBQ line up thus far includes; Smokey Rhodes BBQ, Randy's Roadside Bar-B-Que, Whiskeys on the Water, The Smoke N' Pig Bbq, Mr. Pit BBQ,, Detroit BBQ Company, Smokies Restaurant & Tavern, Brass Kitchenand Billy Sims BBQ, who will all have their full menu of items for sale.
The band Atomic Radio Band will kick off the live music on the stage beginning at 6 p.m. People will also be able to watch the KCBS BBQ teams prep for Saturday’s big competition.
On Saturday, it’s the official start of KCBS sanctioned event. It will run from noon to 11 p.m. Guests will be invited to watch the teams prepare their food for the judges, sample or buy full meals from the restaurant vendors, and listen to live bands all day long. Wisteria hits the stage at noon and Mad Rabbit goes on at 6 p.m.
There will be a kid’s area in Bishop Park. It will feature bounce house, inflatable obstacles, climbing wall, mechanical bull and face painting. The Wyandotte 1000 Kiwanis Club will also give out 500 FREE bicycle helmets to children 12 and under from noon-3 p.m. (or while supplies last).
101 WRIF — FM Detroit will be broadcasting live from the event on Friday and Saturday. WRIF’s Anne Carlini will be on site as a guest judge. There will also be a cornhole tournament and fowling competition. The WRIF ROCK GIRL will present the championship belt and trophies to the KCBS winners.
